KINDERGARTEN waiting lists in the Far North are on track to be cut under the State Government's rollout of early learning service reforms. More than 22,000 Queensland children have enrolled in kindergarten in the past year as another 16 early learning services are preparing to open across Queensland this year.

Cindy Shannon, an Ngugi woman and descendent of Moreton Bay’s Quandamooka people, has been appointed as the University of Queensland’s inaugural pro vice-chancellor for indigenous education. Ms Shannon says A university like the University of Queensland has got enormously rich resources in terms of its breadth of areas of specialisation and we should be asking every one of those to be responsive to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander issues.’

Ms Shannon, who studied for a bachelor of arts at the university before completing a graduate diploma at the University of Southern Queensland, added that she wanted to assist in ensuring that the university contributed to the COAG Closing the Gap goal for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Ms Shannon currently chairs the Indigenous Advisory Committee at the National Health and Medical Research Council and previously chaired the Queensland Ministerial Advisory Committee on AIDS, Sexual Health and Hepatitis.

Irish-American Charles Feeney is Australia’s most generous philanthropic benefactor. His charitable trust, The Atlantic Philanthropies has donated over $500 million to largely medical and university research projects. Atlantic will spend itself out of existence in 2016 under 79 rear-old Mr Feeney’s aim of giving away his wealth during his lifetime.

An agreement has been established between the University of New England and the University of California’s School of Medicine to create initiatives to modify medical and health education.

[5] New vice-chancellor for University of Western Australia

Paul Johnson, vice-chancellor of La Trobe University, has been appointed as vice-chancellorof the University of Western Australia. Mr Johnson will commence his new position in 2012.
